On Tuesday, MSNBC reported that terrorists are aiming for hotels as they offer the ultimate soft target: a fixed location, lots of human traffic and low security. Hotels that attract Westerners are especially attractive as they give militants a high probability of killing a large number of them in a single attack. Killing a large number of Westerners also guarantees a great deal of international press coverage of the attack, which the terrorists desire as much or more than the actual killings.
As I have written before as well, the report states that hotels are reluctant to increase security measures which can be cumbersome and inconvenience guests. However, as terrorism related liability becomes a larger concern, security will become a more prominent issue.
