Last night Times Square was evacuated for the third time in little more than a week when a suspicious package was reported to the NYPD. The evacuations come on the heels of an attempted car bombing on May 1. Each time the packages were determined to not be a threat. This particular package turned out to be garbage.
The good news is that the public is becoming increasingly vigilant about reporting potential threats to the authorities. Even if the package turns out to be a box of empty water bottles like the latest one, no one should second guess themselves about reporting suspicious packages or behavior. Determining whether an abandoned package is dangerous or not is best left up to the police and even if it turns out to be nothing, it is better to be safe than sorry.
One thing that you can do if you feel unsure about reporting an apparently abandoned package or piece of luggage is to simply ask the people in the immediate area if the package belongs to them. If no one claims it, then it is best to report it. Never touch the package yourself.
